Lip Augmentation

Dr. Joseph W. Rucker

The lips have been an inspiration for poetry and their appreciation is repeated throughout plays, movies and songs. We are mesmerized by their scarlet hue and caressed by their silky softness. It is often said that the eyes are the windows to the soul but the lips are the gateway to sensuality.

Shapes : Lips come in all shapes and sizes with the most common complaint being that they are to thin or flat. This thinning is due to several factors including genetics, aging and or smoking. The upper lip is always the first to lose volume. As the volume diminishes, there is less vermillion show, resulting in a longer and thinner appearance. Other common complaints are thinning of the lower lip and irregular lip border and a down turning of the corners of the mouth.

Lip augmentation uses a variety of materials to create fuller-looking lips, and lip augmentation materials also can reduce wrinkles around the mouth area.

Temporary solutions for lip augmentation are achieved with the use of dermal fillers and fat injections, both requiring repeat treatments to maintain the augmentation, as the materials are readily absorbed into the body. Restylane is one type of dermal filler that is often used and the results can last for up to 6 months. More permanent lip augmentation techniques utilize fat injections or fat and dermal skin graphs.

Lip augmentation using dermal fillers or fat injections requires only a local anesthetic and recovery is minimal. Care is taken to avoid over injection so as to avoid that dreaded done appearance. If the more invasive fat, skin flap is utilized, there is moderate swelling for at least 1 week after the procedure. Lip augmentation using dermal fillers is a 15 minute procedure and the fat, dermal skin graph technique takes approximately 45 minutes.

We are currently using the new The French Lip technique. It is a new lip augmentation technique which is a customized approach. The technique concentrates on the augmentation of the natural components of the lip that are lacking and focuses on accentuating the natural curvature of the lip and on producing a natural lift at the corners of the mouth.
