In addition to achieving desired lifted appearances,
breast reduction can help women with overly large breasts
achieve relief from physical problems such as upper and
lower back pain, bra strap irritation, neck strain and
skin breakdown beneath the breast. Most procedures reduce
breast size from cup size D to B or C. The breast reduction
procedure is often covered by insurance.
The procedure is done under a general anesthetic requiring
an overnight stay in the hospital. Operative time is 2
1⁄2 hrs. In the vast majority of patients the nipple
is not detached so as to preserve sensation and the ability
to breast feed. Most patient rate the immediate pain level
as a 2 to 3 on a scale of 10.
Recommended treatment for:
- Back pain due to breast size
- Post weight loss breast size reduction
- Reduction of the opposite breast after mastectomy and reconstruction
- Breasts disproportionately large compared to body size
Recovery time:
Sutures are removed 6-7 days after surgery. Light activity
is allowed after 10-14 days. Most patients return to normal
activity after 3-6 weeks.
