The first signs of aging often appear as tiny wrinkles around the eyes, forehead, cheeks, and lips. While normal, their presence can be distressing. When addressing questions about wrinkles, I separate them into two categories: wrinkles caused by aging and those by gravity.
Dynamic wrinkles are associated with our facial expressions. As we contract our muscles to smile, laugh, and squint, mild wrinkles appear. When we are young they are hardly visible, but wrinkles become deeper and more noticeable as we grow older. The most common areas for dynamic wrinkles are around the lips, corners of the eyelids (crow’s feet), between the eyebrows, and on the forehead. The presence of these wrinkles often makes people look tired and older than they actually are.
The other type of facial wrinkle is caused by the sagging and folding of the skin due to gravity and loss of skin elasticity. These folds are commonly found from the side of the nose to the corner of the mouth, beneath the eye, and from the corner of the mouth to the chin. Injections can dramatically smooth skin in areas such as your eyes, frown lines, the forehead, and also the neck region.
With an understanding of the two types of facial wrinkles, we can talk about types of treatment. BOTOX® and DYSPORT® Cosmetic and dermal fillers have gained visibility, but often patients do not understand that they are completely different treatments.
What Are BOTOX® and DYSPORT® Cosmetic?
BOTOX® and DYSPORT® Cosmetic is used to treat dynamic facial wrinkling. It is a purified protein and toxin extracted from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, and is a safe and effective way to reduce facial wrinkling without surgery.*
How Do BOTOX® and DYSPORT® Work?
Fine needle injections target the facial muscles that contract to cause dynamic wrinkles. These muscles relax and stop contracting when treated, significantly reducing the wrinkles of skin above the muscle. The effect may last 3-6 months, at which time the muscle regains movement and wrinkles will reappear.
Do BOTOX® Injections Cause Pain?
Injections of BOTOX® and DYSPORT® are small and superficial and feel somewhat like a mosquito bite. Injections do not require anesthesia, but the area can be numbed if the patient requests it.
What Results Can I Expect?
BOTOX® and DYSPORT® Cosmetic administration is done at Rucker MD Plastic Surgery Clinic and is a 5-minute procedure. The effect of BOTOX® and DYSPORT® Cosmetic begins to occur within 3 days after the treatment. By the end of the first week, you will probably notice a reduction of fine lines and wrinkles or sweating around the targeted areas. Some patients may have some immediate bruising from the injection. Most patients return to normal social activity within 4-24 hours. BOTOX® and DYSPORT® injections may be repeated after the effects wear off.*
Treatment of Excessive Sweating
Units of BOTOX® and DYSPORT® Cosmetic may also be used to treat hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating. This condition is caused by over-activity of the sweat glands which commonly affects the underarms, hands, feet, and face. Many times, prescription-strength antiperspirants and laser treatments do not achieve the patient’s desired results for excessive sweating. Through approximately 200 cases, we have found the use of BOTOX® or DYSPORT® to treat axillary hyperhidrosis has caused a significant reduction in the condition and, in most instances, results have lasted 8-12 months. This treatment option can also be used for the hands and the feet.

Dermal Fillers were developed to help smooth out the wrinkles which occur during aging. Dermal fillers are commonly used to raise a depressed scar, enhance lips, and replace soft tissue loss. Results are accomplished by injection of the filler beneath the scar or introducing the appropriate volume to smooth the wrinkle.*
There are several classes of dermal fillers available in the United States. Collagen fillers have fallen from favor because of the high risk of allergic reaction. The popular Restylane® requires no skin test for allergic sensitivity and lasts a bit longer than collagen. It is derived from a compound which acts to hold moisture and when injected, acts to plump the skin up. A new class of fillers is composed of synthetic calcium derivatives and is available under the brand name of Radiesse®. This class is promising that the results can last up to 2-3 years.*
Consider the impact that gravity and aging may be having upon your appearance and then schedule an appointment to discuss the possibilities of BOTOX® and DYSPORT® Cosmetic and dermal fillers to minimize your wrinkles.

I have had botox and fillers done with Dr. Rucker. Today I had a Laser resurfacing. I love Dr. Rucker. I don't understand why people think his bedside manner is subpar. I think he is funny, kind, warm, understanding and caring. He is also very good and experienced. I would recommend him to anyone. Will post before and after pics when I am healed
